This Is the One is the third English studio album by Japanese American pop singer-songwriter Utada, released by Island Records in the United States digitally on March 24, 2009 and physically on May 12, 2009. The album was originally set to be released in Japan on March 4 but was pushed back to March 14. The album was only released in North America, Japan and some parts of Asia. In Japan, the album topped the Oricon's International Album chart and peaked at number three on the Weekly chart
Utada is already one of the world's biggest recording artists and 'This Is The One is comprised of 10 self-penned songs recorded with top producers Stargate and Tricky (Britney Spears, Madonna, Mariah Carey). With a number of album and single releases over the last 10 years in Japan, the young star has become one of the most successful and acclaimed Pop singers in Japanese music history with record sales of over 52 million. In approaching the new album, Utada was very careful about choosing her collaborators and setting their expectations. With both teams, I wanted them to lay out the basic tracks," she says, "but I told them that I have to write my own songs, with complete control over melody and lyrics. The producers also turned out to have very different processes.
The opening ballad, "Come Back to Me" is everything good about Utada all in one, with simple, precious lyrics and a delicate melody sharing space with a clever idea, which in this case is the bombastic piano intro that's straight out of classical music. Clever ideas are Utada's secret weapon as "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI" combines the classic Ryuichi Sakamoto movie theme its half named after with contemporary R&B flavored come-on's, as in "FYI: We're gonna be up all night

This is the One embodies the grieving process through heartbreak. While the dancing, clubbing and sex part might not be as much the appropriate method of moving on for you as it is for Utada, the important thing is what those tracks symbolize, which is that happiness can be found in whatever one takes pleasure in doing. While certainly not the most musically adventurous album in Utada's discography, I would recommend anyone with a broken heart and an open mind to give this (is the) one a spin.
