LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY IS home to one of the most truly innovative music scenes in north america. As one time SLINT member David Pajo enters the studio in his latest side project AERIAL M - and comes out with seven low key instrumentals that, by all accounts, is some of the finest original music you will hear around. I've always grouped David with two of my other "favorite" innovative guitarists: Jim O' Rourke and David Grubbs. Certainly Pajo is the more "accessible" of the three, crafting consciously simple melodies with bright clean guitar lines and an up front bass tone; this is not much of a departure from his THE FOR CARNATION "Fight Songs" days or his gatherings with TORTOISE. The mid-tempo "Dazed and Awake" is sure to magnetize fans to his style and the eerie "Always Farewell" does a fine job of recanting the flood of '97 which the cover so bleakly describes and as the liner notes say was recorded during. "AASS" creates tension by holding the first beat for one very long measure and breaks much later which gives the song a kind of unfinished feel; like SLINT used to do but without the bombast and abrasion. This has the potential to reach a wider audience and not just to the dutiful musicians of the artfully endowed. For all its apparent simplicity; on closer inspection this is a symphony of emotional complication.
