Borboletta is last great Santana studio album from their classic period. It's far from his early blues-rock or jazz-rock albums and contains mostly relaxed Latin-fusion and Latin-pop. I am sitting now, drinking Cuban coffee at warm room and watching through the window to autumn rain. Borboletta' was Santana's 6th album and is generally regarded as his last great one, often compared to 'Caravanserai' even. I have to agree, this is a very warm and mellow album that concentrates on atmosphere rather then hit potential. The band sounds relaxed and the album flows very freely and spontaneous, which is much appreciated.
Borboletta was the first new Santana band studio album in 11 months and the group's sixth overall. The main problem was that the band seemed to be coasting; Carlos turned in the usual complement of high-pitched lead guitar work, and the percussionists pounded away, but the Santana sound had long since taken over from any individual composition, and the records were starting to sound alike. That, in turn, started to make them inessential; Borboletta spent less time on the charts than any previous Santana album.
Borboletta would mark the end of the jazz-fusion era of Santana (which had started three years earlier with the release of Caravanserai). It would also be Michael Shrieve’s last album with the band until the release of Santana IV in 2016. This is no coincidence, since he was one of the main catalysts for the direction the band was taking at that time. After Borboletta, Carlos would start to pursue a much more commercial sound, while also going back to the Latin rock approach that marked the band’s first three albums.
