Singles by Malo - a new album (release date: May 25, 2018) @ New Releases No. The legendary and pioneering Bay Area band Malo found inspiration in its Latin roots while mixing it with rock, blues, funk and jazz creating a musical stew that was augmented by a horn section. At the time, horn sections were popular in rock bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, and Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Drawn from their four long players, a series of singles were issued for radio airplay, the first of which, Sauvecito was to be their biggest hit and has been called The Chicano National Anthem.
Malo were already flirting with Latin rhythms and percussion by the time they were spotted by future Malo record producer David Rubinson, who had signed Carlos Santana's band Santana to Columbia Records a few years earlier. Rubinson was impressed with the band from the very first he saw them play, at a seamy San Jose Avenue Club, and soon he was helping spread the word about the explosive Latin rock party down sounds of Malo. After impressing A&R executives at Warner Bros. Malo were signed to an exclusive recording contract.
Latin Bugaloo compiles the A-and B-sides of six Malo singles released during the band's 1970s golden age, plus two sides ("Pana" and "Just Say Goodbye") released as a single only in Turkey for reasons not even Santana remembers. We had Latin percussion and we had a horn section.

The first released album by Malo features a stunning piece of art on its cover. It’s a painting of a woman in the arms of a king, created by Mexican modernist painter, Jesus Helguera. The classicism of this artwork heavily implies that the music within is equally as memorable, and as beautiful and engaging as can be imagined. And for the record, the Malo – Latin Bugaloo (The Warner Bros. Singles) is a grand collection of Malo greatness. If you’re a fan, you’ll have no regrets.

Latin Bugaloo: The Warner Brothers Singles. When most people think of Latin blues-based Bay Area bands, Santana is almost always the first one mentioned. That Santana is the surname for band leader Carlos Santana but his younger brother, band leader Jorge Santana, led an equally impressive group in the Bay Area, the horn-infused rock/blues/jazz ensemble Malo. Like other California bands War and Tower of Power, their defining sound was horns, but unlike those bands, their Latin and African percussion gave them a unique identity. Jorge Santana calls Malo pretty much a jam band but their natural energy required structured arrangements. This was the way they were originally heard on the radio. The ten piece group released their debut album in 1972.
